轻质耐火砖选用优质板状刚玉、莫来石为骨料，以硅线石复合为基质，另添特种添加剂和少量稀土氧化物混炼，经高压成型、高温烧成。轻质耐火砖一般是指密度小于1.8kg/ms的耐火砖，在工业窑炉和其他热工设备上用作隔热材料。与一般耐火砖比较，轻质耐火砖抗渣蚀性、力学强度、耐磨损性较差，高温下体积收缩较大。
普通轻质隔热耐火砖生产的材质有粘土质、高铝质高强漂珠砖，低铁莫来石、高铝聚轻隔热耐火砖，李藻土隔热耐火砖。由于轻质耐火砖具有密度小、气孔率高、热导率小、保温性好以及有一定的耐压强度等特点，在热处理设备上已获得了广泛的应用。
